firefox bug (fedora or mozilla?)

by Mike Wrighton 2010-07-30T18:12:08+00:00
Hi all,
I've come across some sites that only partially render when using
firefox. I had been using 3.0.15 so upgraded to 3.6.6 from Remi
Collet's repository in hopes of better functionality but the problem
persists. Note that both of these render correctly when using Chrome.
[1] has three columns. Column one is the login box and it doesn't
display. By drilling down using firebug I can change the iframe to
"display: block" and it appears and is functional. I can't remember
where I found the error but the complaint was that it couldn't find
busybox. I don't know if that is a dependency but it isn't part of the
standard install; yum installing it had no effect (which I expected
because I think there is also a javascript busybox).
[2] has two columns. The left one is the TOC but it doesn't display
either. I can't figure out that one but am inclined to believe it is
also javascript related.
Would some brave soul be so kind as to give these a whirl and let me
know if it works for them?
Thanks,
Mike Wright

Both are working fine with firefox-3.6.7-1.fc13.x86-64 and

What version of Fedora are you running? What exact Firefox and xulrunner
packages?

the video freezes after a few seconds. On Chrome it runs forever.

you might find firebug, a firefox debugger, to shed some light on your

I just checked those sites with Galeon and they work there, too.

Time to upgrade, I'm afraid. You'll get no support for Fedora 10. It was

Thanks for that but I'm well aware that it's been EOL'd. I was rather
more curious as to why I've never seen this brought up (been rh'ing
since redhat5.2 fit on a single cd in a red jacket a dozen years ago).
Here's an example of why I'm so curious. While perusing
http://docs.fedoraproject.org/en-US/index.html
with firefox on f10 I was surprised to find no TOC at the left. Viewing
the source (I added line-feeds for readability purposes) I extracted this:

This is an iframe, to view it upgrade
your browser or enable iframe display.

The rendering problems I mentioned previously all involved .
I've never found anything using edit-do with .
Hard to believe I'm the only person who ever noticed it ;/
Nonetheless, thanks for your time.
Ever onward to f13 (networkmangler and no network connection; regression
to 1280x1024). Fun, fun, fun in the sun out here in CA, USA.
Best, :m)

Since you had the problem in FireFox 3.0.x and still have it in 3.6.x,
apparently it's not a bug that's been fixed.
When you installed the most recent version of FireFox, did you do a
clean install, or did you overwrite the original troublesome version?
If the latter, I'd suspect there's something in your configuration,
plug-ins, add-ons, etc. that's causing the IFRAMEs not to render,
since other people here don't seem to have that problem.
Googling "firefox not displaying iframe" yields 5,600,000 pages with
suggestions.
There's a good chance something specific to your configuration is
causing the problem and that it's not related to Fedora nor the
version of FireFox you're using.
While it's a good idea to catch up with the currently supported
versions, if you're going to be bringing your configuration files
along, you may still be having the same problems. Before doing that,
I'd suggest you try a little more troubleshooting with the current
setup.
A couple of the pages from the Google search above suggest disabling
your add-ons and trying Safe Mode to see if that shows different
behavior.

Interesting as iframe support has been in Firefox since 1.0....
Something smells 'fishy' here in that you cannot run this.
Are you blocking outgoing http 'questions' and the default browser for
the site does not support iframes (that would be unusual in these times,
but some text based browsers don't.)

The /enable it/ instruction, is a generic instruction that many web
authors just bung between the iframe tags, without thinking about what
they're doing. A better idea would have been for the page to *include*
the table of contents, or other links, in there; so that without the
iframe, someone could still navigate the page.
Some browsers have options for iframe rendering, but not all of them.
Firefox has an about:config option for frames, in general. And some
filtering proxies have options for filtering out iframes, too.

@jack, roger, stephen, aaron, tim, james, and any others I may have
missed, thanks for all your efforts.
@list, sorry for the noise.
Once again the problem existed between the chair and the keyboard (pebcak).
I moved .mozilla out of the way and restarted firefox which recreated a
clean .mozilla directory. iframes worked. So I went file by file, dir
by dir looking for a difference that could explain what was happening.
Got to /chrome/ and found the file userContent.css where the resident
genius had added the line iframe {display: none;}.
Sometime ago in the wayback I was experimenting with using iframes as a
client/server communication channel and since there was no need to
see/style them I hid them from myself (which also let me explore
customizing firefox). By the time I had finished with the experiments I
had completely forgotten about userContent.css.
It's taken months to figure out what I'd done. Sure made
online-banking/bill-paying/etc. an endeavor every time I tried. If it
weren't for firebug I'd have been back to writing checks. aaaargh!
Thankful, sorry, and embarrassed,
Mike Wright
